Eliza (Lizzie )was only a few weeks old when her mother Sarah aged 24 years drowned herself in the canal at Newcastle, Staffordshire in 1890. Lizzie's sister Margaret was 3 years old. Sarah's mother Margaret Ford aged 51 also drowned herself in the canal in Hanley in 1897.The coroner said that she had never got over the death of Sarah.
