In 1911 Leonard became the youngest Headmaster in Staffordshire when he came to teach at Ipstones School, he stayed there until his retirement in 1946. He saw active service during world war 1 gaining the Military Cross for his gallantry and courage. He had a weekly letter published in the Cheadle and Tean Times using the pseudonym, Matt of the Moorlands, from 1953 until 1966. He died aged 81 in 1967.
