Mary Ann was the daughter of John S. and Susannah Gardiner of Burslem. On the 1881 census for 13, Queen Street, Burslem Mary Ann's grandmother Mary A aged 71 had a Hosier and Haberdasher Shop. The shop was still in the family when Mary Ann was married from there in 1921 to be become the second wife of Alec Thorley.
