James had a second relationship with Emma Kinder after he left his wife Elizabeth Lownds.Although they called themselves man and wife they did not marry.They had four children. On the baptism record of their daughter Eleanor, the vicar put her down as the daughter of James and Emma Coates, which is then scribbled out and replaced with, Eleanor daughter of Emma Kinder, Widow, living with a married man.
