Lizzie Annie was the daughter of John and Mary Ratcliffe of Leigh, Staffordshire. When Lizzie married Robert Brown they went to live in Accrington, Lancaster where Robert was working. Their daughter Lilian was born there. They came back to Leigh, Staffordshire where they took over the The Staffordshire Knott public house which had been in Lizzie's family for a number of years.
