James was the son of Richard (a Joiner) and his wife Betty Harewood of Heys Lane, Over Darwen, Lancashire. James was a Cotton Tape Sizer.James married Martha Day in 1861 and they had a daughter Ann Day Harewood. In 1871 Martha was back in Staffordshire with Ann and James was with his parents in Lancashire. On the 1881 census James states that he is a Widower, which is not true.
