Herbert was a Coal Miner and then a Publican. In 1871 Herbert was the Beer seller at The Red Lion Inn at Boundary, Dilhorne and in 1881 he was the Beer seller at The Royal Oak Inn in the village of Dilhorne also a Farmer of 50 acres. He died in 1905 aged 72 years. On his burial record his aged is recorded as 69 yrs
